Commercial Gas Supply & Meters

New Commercial Gas Supply and Meter for my business.

Will I automatically be provided with a gas meter when my new gas supply is installed for my business premises?

There is a common misconception that the installation of a commercial gas supply to business premises will automatically be combined with the installation of the relevant gas meter at the same time. This is not the case. The supply and the meter are regarded as 2 separate jobs and you will need to arrange for the meter to be installed independently.

Do I have to pay for a new commercial gas meter for my business?

The keyword here is ‘business’. Getting a commercial gas meter installed for a business will cost you; in contrast to domestic premises*.

As a business, or other non-domestic organisation, you will need to arrange the installation of the gas meter yourself.

Can I get a free gas meter for my business?

Some suppliers promote a ‘free commercial gas meter’.

However, these ‘free commercial gas meters’ are almost always contingent on your acceptance of a gas supply contract from them, and It has been noted that these supply contracts can be significantly more expensive than otherwise available.

How do I organise a gas meter installation to combine with my new commercial gas supply?

  1. You will need the Service Pipe Energy Value (SPEV) for your site. This confirms the volume of gas (in kilowatts Kw) than can be delivered in one hour.
  2. You will also want the Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN) which should be provided to you by your GAS SHIPPER.
  3. You will need a gas supply contract before getting a commercial gas meter installed.
  4. If you cannot provide the documents containing the new connection’s ‘Scope of Works’ and SPEV, a GT1 Test will be required for the meter to be installed, once the connection is in place.
