How Do I Upgrade My Gas Service?

Do you need to install new gas equipment in your home or business?
If so, you may find that your old gas supply is no longer adequate for the potential increase in demand.

If that is the case, you need to ensure your equipment will work as planned and your gas won’t cut out or provide a weaker flow. If your new demand is greater than your existing supply, you will need to upgrade your service and your meter.

GETTING A GAS SERVICE QUOTATION

Firstly, we will provide all our customers with the most cost-effective solution designed around their needs. To create a valid estimation, we will:

Examine the existing pipework to check gas availability and supply volume

This will show us whether the existing pipework needs to be replaced. If so, sometimes the service will also need re-routing. We will provide you with all the information you need.

Establish the size of your current/previous service

We just need to know what kind of meter you currently have.

Domestic properties and small businesses often have small U6 meters which have limited capacity. For larger houses or businesses, either check with your plumber or: see here

Estimate your gas usage

You need to know 2 things, the most important of which is your Peak Demand. This is often referred to as SPEV, or Service Pipe Energy Value. This is the maximum hourly gas load you require with all the required equipment running at the same time.

If you aren’t sure we will refer to the ‘peak demand’ of your equipment to create an estimate. Should you need help with this then speak to us.

Use the property address and meter location

We need to identify

  • The exact location of the property
  • The precise location of the desired meter location

External meters are generally placed in specially designed meter housings and in the event, your meter requires upgrading you may also need to upgrade the meter housing.

HOW TO UPGRADE YOUR DOMESTIC METER

If you’re upgrading your domestic service, we would advise contacting your gas supplier, who may be able to arrange for your current meter to be removed and a new, larger meter to be installed. However, many suppliers won’t offer this service for larger meters, in which case Gas Connections provide a complete, end to end service.

HOW TO UPGRADE YOUR COMMERCIAL METER

Once it is confirmed that a service upgrade is required the existing meter will need to be removed. In this case, we will include the cost of the removal of the existing meter and the installation of the new meter in our quote for you.
