A GT1 Survey is an essential test if you’ve moving into a new property or business premises where you either don’t currently have a gas meter or are not sure if the meter will be adequate for your purposes.
The GT1 test, or Gas Transporter 1 test, provides essential information about the gas supply before having a meter installed. The information provided will determine whether the current infrastructure is able to provide the volume of gas you need for your business, or whether a new or upgraded gas connection is required. Why would I need a GT1?
There are many circumstances in which you could find yourself needing a GT1.
You may need to find out if a gas pipe in your property can supply gas to your property.
You may be installing new equipment and need to know if you your gas supply can cope with the increased demand. Or you may want to remove a gas pipe and aren’t sure if it still has live gas inside.

How does a GT1 survey gas pipe pressure test work?
When moving into premises it’s not uncommon to find there is no longer a meter connected to the gas pipes. There may well be gas pipes on site, although it is not known if there is a live gas supply. Applying for a GT1 is essential to understand the current condition of the supply and what it will take to get gas flowing.
If you’ve moved into commercial premises and you propose increasing the volume of gas to your property or need a gas meter fitted a GT1 test is essential.
Here are some of the elements that a GT1 test will tell you:
- The capacity of the gas pipe in kilowatts (kW)
- The size and type of Emergency Control Valve (ECV). ECVs come in different sizes and can be screwed or threaded, and either metric or imperial, depending on age.
- The pressure in the gas main, (low pressure (LP), medium pressure (MP), intermediate pressure (IP), and high pressure (HP))
- A live-dead test will also be conducted to find out if the gas connection is still live and connected to the pipe
A GT1 survey can occasionally be carried out remotely, but they generally require an engineer to visit the site.
How long does a GT1 take?
It isn’t possible to give an exact timeframe for completion of a GT1 as it depends on the availability of engineers and can be influenced by adverse weather conditions. However, on average, it takes between 10 and 15 working days from the date of submission.

How to complete the GT form.
The GT1 request form consists of two pages. Applicants need only complete sections 1 to 3 on page one. Sections 4 and 5 on page two will be completed by the network and form the part of the response to the customer.

Section 1: Details of Person/Organisation requesting information
- Date of request – provide the date of your request for information.
- Requester’s reference number – if you have a reference number for your project please enter. Otherwise, please leave this blank.
- Requester organisation – if you are acting on behalf of a 3rd party, please provide the organisation’s name. If you are requesting the GT1 for your own property you can leave this blank.
- Requester’s address and postcode – add the address where correspondence should be sent to.
- Contact name, email and phone number – add the name and contact details of the person who should be contacted if there is a query about the GT1 request.
Section 2: Site Details
- Site name, address, and postcode – provide the site address for the gas service being tested.
- Contact and phone number – 70% of GT1 requests may require a site visit by a surveyor. Please provide the contact details of the person who will meet our surveyor on site.
- O.S. grid reference number – the precise location of gas services is important and providing a UK Grid Reference Finder is helpful when looking at gas pipework plans and locations. You can find the O.S, grid map here. Once on the website, enter the site postcode on the left of the map and press go. The map will take you to the postcode. Hover your mouse cursor over the site and right click the mouse button. (If using a mobile or tablet, tap twice on your site). A box will appear with X Easting and Y Northing coordinates, which can be entered into the request form.
- MPRN – please provide your gas meter point reference number (MPRN). This is found on most gas bills. If you have trouble finding it, you can ask us, or you can contact your gas supplier.
- Connections quotation reference number – if you have recently had a quotation from a utility infrastructure provider (UIP), please enter the reference number of the quote. Otherwise, please leave this blank.
- Status report from requester – tick the relevant box or boxes. If you know there is no gas at the emergency control valve (ECV) or there is no ECV on the end of the service, then please leave these boxes blank.
- Energy required – please provide us with the service pipe energy value (SPEV) in kWh. The Service Pipe Energy Value (SPEV) in kWh is the maximum hourly gas load with all the appliances working at the same time. If you don’t know your SPEV you will need to consult a Gas Safe registered engineer or talk to us here at Gas Connections.
This SPEV must be completed prior to submitting your GT1 request.
Section 3: Information Required
The Applicant should complete this section, by answering yes or no.
- Smart metering – you must inform us if this GT1 request is made as part of a smart metering installation. Tick yes if a smart meter has been or is due to be installed on the service. Tick no if there is no meter on the service and you have not approached a gas supplier to provide one.
- Pressure information required – tick yes or no if you want to know the pressure of the service. If you plan on providing this information to a gas supplier or meter asset manager (MAM) please tick yes.
- Capacity information required – tick yes or no if you want to know whether a specific gas load can pass through your existing service.
- Available ECV details required – tick yes or no if you require the emergency control valve size. Note: The ECV details will only be provided where the GT has arranged a site visit and (or) the information is available.
- Service pipe status live/dead check undertaken – tick yes or no if a live/dead check has been recently undertaken.
- Live/dead reference number – if you have requested a Live/Dead Test for the GT prior to the GT1 submission, the GT’s Live/Dead reference number should be provided. If no check has been made, please leave blank.
- New service – tick yes or no if a new service has recently been installed. If yes, please provide the UIP reference in section 2 in the connections quotation reference number box.
- Existing service – tick yes or no if there is an existing service to the property.

Section 4 – Essential Network Information:
The GT will complete this section based on the information the Applicant has provided in Sections 2 and 3. Where the GT feels that additional information is to be provided, including ECV information, where requested and readily available, this will appear in the ‘Additional Information/Comments’ box.
Section 5 – Application Valid Date:
The valid date provided by the GT on the GT1 form, will last for 90days. The GT will not be responsible for any changes made to site, during the 90 day period.
